The youngsters from Gujarat State Chess Association¨s academy team shone bright in the recently held World Online School Chess Tournament.
The team led by Vrandesh Parekh reached the final stages of the tournament which will be held in Dubai later this year on the sidelines of FIDE World Chess Championship between GM Magnus Carlsen, the reigning world champion, and challenger GM Ian Nepomniachtchi, who won the 2020 Candidates Tournament.
The team, that comprises of Women FIDE Masters Dhyana Patel and Vishwa Vasnawala, Women Chess Master Riddhi Patel, Kartavya Anadkat, Bhrigu Suryanarayan, Swayham Das, Sahil Samdani and Tinaz Mistry along with Vrandesh, came up with an impressive display to record 19 wins and a draw in the Preliminary, Qualifying and Semi-Finals. In a field of 296 teams, the team from Gujarat recorded wins over rival teams from Spain, Turkey, UAE, Armenia, Ireland, Russia, Israel, Malaysia, Argentina,
Czech Republic and Hungary in their march to the finals, where they will compete for the top honours with eight other teams. In a GSCA press statement, its president Emeritus Ajay Patel congratulated the players and officials (team representative Bhavesh Patel and delegate Ankit Dalal) on their impressive display at the world stage.
